The Workshop is honored to host another concert of the series NOT SILENT conceived by Compass Collective. NOT SILENT seeks to expand the musical or sonic event towards the politics of solidarity and resistance, this time with the unconventional guitar and oud (and saxophone) duo of Jasper Stadhouders and Dirar Kalash.
Jasper Stadhouders (Tilburg, the Netherlands, 1989) plays electric guitar, acoustic guitar and bass guitar. He is an improviser, composer, bandleader and concert organizer. He comes from a musical family and has performed publicly since the age of 8. Jasper was taught by his father Walter between ages 6 and 15, who is a guitar teacher. His mother Mieke
teaches piano and is also a violinist. He is the younger brother of Bram, who is a hard working guitarist, improviser and composer in his own right. Jasper studied jazz guitar at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam between 2004 and 2010, with Maarten van der Grinten, Jesse van Ruller and Martijn van Iterson. Jasper is an active member of the international improvised music circuit, both as a performer and
organizer. Since 2016, he is a member of Amsterdam-based musician’s collective “Stichting DOEK” (with Kaja Draksler, Michael Moore, Wilbert de Joode, Wolter Wierbos, Eric Boeren, John Dikeman and Oscar Jan Hoogland). They organize the annual DOEK Festival in Amsterdam. Jasper has performed at the festival for many editions already, and has been part of the programming committee since 2016.
Dirar Kalash is a musician and sound artist whose work spans a wide range of musical and sonic practices within a variety of compositional and improvisational contexts. His solo oud music shows a deep understanding and mastery of both the history of classical arabic music and the sonic possibilities of the instrument itself.
Concert: 19:30, space is limited, so make sure to get there on time. Thank you!
