A 2-DAY WORKSHOP

In this workshop female identified and non-binary people will learn an introduction to electro-acoustic music production including Music History, Field Recordings & Ableton Live Software for processing sounds. Participants can join a single day based on their main needs and interest or attend the two days.

DAY 01 Thursday from 17-20 p.m.

Electro-acoustic Sound Art Introduction (1937-2001)

Part I

In this two hour introduction the mentor will present the most fundamental historical background of electro-acoustic composition and sound art production. We will learn some theoretical aspects as well as some live examples of excellent composers who were pioneers in the electro-acoustic sound art field such as Delia Derbyshire, Halim El-Dadh & John Cage. In this journey we will also explore electro-acoustic music, tape music, musique concrete and electronically generated (synthetic) sounds. This introduction will give all participants an excellent overview of the content behind electro-acoustic practice as well as important skills to produce sound works knowing how pioneers composed their works based on analogue experimentation.

Part II

Electro-acoustic Sound Art Production
Field Recordings & Audio Samples

In this section participants will learn how to record themselves audios using a cellphone or a high quality recorder (Zoom). They will learn to explore the world of field recordings listening to some examples and doing self-made experiments. We will also learn the different type of audio formats and how to record voice, text and acoustic instruments for audio processing.

At the end of the workshop all participants will have a personal audio archive which can be further use with audio software such as Ableton Live, Audacity or Logic.

After this comes an introduction to Musique Concrète techniques and sound art production, and the first view of Ableton Live software.

DAY 02 Friday from 17-20 p.m.

Electro-acoustic Sound Art Production
Ableton Live Software (Basics)

Software needed: Ableton Live / can be the free trial version +
USB Stick + Headphones + Laptop

In this workshop participants will learn how to produce their own sound works, using their own recordings (recorded in the workshop Day 02), and further processing. The mentor will focus on Musique Concrète techniques mixed with electronic sound art production. This electro-acoustic workshop uses Delia Derbyshire and John Cage’s works as intellectual and sonic reference points.

We will mainly explore Ableton Live in detail (basics). Audio Effects, Instruments, Recording, Audio-Editing and audio mixdowns.

At the end all participants will create a 10 minute sound art composition by themselves using all the elements learned in this workshop including self made audio and field recordings as well as audio software and sound art creative techniques.

THE MENTOR

Verónica Mota – Berlin

Professional sound artist currently working in Berlin. Her works encompass analogue and digital synthesis, field recordings and Musique Concrète techniques, often displaying her proficiency at playing a variety of instruments. She has produced a large body of soundtrack work for Radio, film and performance, and, with Cubop & Espectra Negra, as a solo artist in her own right.

Verónica Mota is also the founder and curator behind Urban Arts Berlin, a non-profit arts organization based in Berlin, Germany. She works at bringing together excellent talents from all over the world. Her experience and hard work have found a fantastic global resonance in the field of sonic art. She has become one of the most important curators for supporting international female composers and musicians in Berlin. She does not, however, exclude male artists.

Urban Arts Berlin Radio has become a new of her current projects where she presents and promotes the work of sound artists she has released under the Urban Arts Berlin label. Particularly relevant for her radio show is her excellent project Synthesis with two Volumes and a total of 75 sound works by professional composers -with a strong female presence- from all over the world. Urban Arts Berlin Radio is streamed in three platforms including Radio Resonance Extra in the United Kingdom, The Pi Radio Verbund Network and Urban Arts Berlin in Germany.

Since 2016 she also became member of The Ready Orchestra which brings together 21 female soloists based in Berlin with a Classic, Electronic, Electro-acoustic and Experimental background.
